Within The Miami Student Magazine, each designer is paired with a writer and works closely with them to enhance their story through graphics and typography. The story I worked on this semester was titled “Leaving Things Unsaid.” In this story, the writer really wanted to emphasize “the power that silence holds, and how people come to the decision to hold back and why.”

Process

I thought about communicating the decision to stay silent through a series of scenes: someone writing a letter, becoming frustrated, and eventually crumbling up the paper. I was drawn to simple typographic treatments that made it feel like the lines of text were falling or being pushed apart.

I created most of the imagery using notebook paper and a blue pen. I scanned and edited my handwriting in Photoshop to clean it up for the design.

Final Layout

During the release party, I learned that my story design was chosen as the theme for this issue! The creative directors used my assets and color scheme for the cover and several other spreads throughout the magazine.

It was super cool to see how my motifs were used to develop a guiding visual style for this magazine. They also created stickers from some of my assets!
